What is a deload week?
Updated September 2026
A deload week is a planned week where the program deliberately backs off: less weight, fewer sets, or both. It is scheduled every couple of months because the body adapts during the backing off, not during the pounding. A deload is not a break from training. It is training.
Why do programs schedule deloads on purpose?
Progressive overload only works if recovery keeps up. Add a rep or five pounds every week for long enough and fatigue quietly accumulates faster than adaptation. The deload is the release valve: a week where the load drops so the adaptation you have been forcing can actually land.
Skipping the deload feels productive and costs you later. Stalled lifts, nagging joints, and sessions that feel heavier than the numbers say are all classic signs the release valve never opened.
What should a deload week look like?
Keep the schedule, cut the load. Show up on the same days, run the same movements, and take most working sets to around half to two thirds of the usual weight, stopping far from failure. The habit stays intact; the fatigue drains.
Log it like any other week. The log is the truth, and a logged deload keeps the record honest when you review a training block later.
How do deloads work in Spec Fitness?
Programs in Spec Fitness are written by working trainers, and the ones that run long enough to need a deload have it built into the phase. You run the week as written and the next block picks the loading back up.
Common questions
- How often should I deload?
- Every couple of months of hard training is the working default. A trainer-written program schedules it for you; if you program yourself, plan one roughly every 6 to 10 weeks.
- Will I lose strength during a deload week?
- No. A single reduced week does not detrain you. Most people come back and lift better the week after, because the fatigue that was hiding their fitness is gone.
- Can I just take the week completely off instead?
- A full week off now and then will not ruin anything, but a light week keeps the habit and the movement quality while still letting recovery land. The habit is worth protecting.
